Benefits of having Breast Augmentation
Does it affect pregnancy and breast feeding?
Women with silicone implants do not risk exposing their breast fed children to excessive amounts of silicone. The Institute of Medicine concluded: “No evidence of elevated silicone in breast milk or any other substance that would be harmful to infants (was found in women with silicone gel-filled breast implants). They also determined: “…that evidence for health effects in children related to maternal breast implants is insufficient or flawed.”
How is Breast Augmentation done?
The method of inserting and positioning your implant will depend on your preferences, body shape and your surgeon’s recommendation. However the implant is normally inserted through an incision made in the natural crease beneath the breast. It is also possible to make the incision in the armpit or around the edge of the areola. The incisions are then closed by using fine, dissolving sutures.
What can I expect from the surgery?
Your expectations need to be realistic. Most patients are pleased with the outcome and find they gain a feeling of increased self-confidence after Breast Augmentation. The overall achievement will be having a completely natural look that compliments your figure.
What is the recovery time?
This will depend on the individual patient however most patients are able to go back to work after a couple of days. Although you can walk about and do very light activities from the next day, it is advisable not to do anything strenuous for 7-10 days. The average recovery time is between 1-2 weeks.
What will happen in the recovery period?
You will feel tired and sore for a few days and will have slight swelling and bruising, which is only natural after a surgical procedure. Most of your discomfort will subside with prescription medication. Following the operation you will have a light dressing in place which will need to be kept dry for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks your dressing will be removed and the wound inspected and lightly cleaned. The scars will be firm and pink for at least six weeks and may remain the same size for several months – it is important to keep in mind that they may take up to 2 years to fade. You will have follow-up visits in the months after Breast Augmentation surgery to check on your progress.
Will I loose nipple sensation after having Breast Augmentation?
Following breast augmentation, many women do experience a temporary loss of sensation in the nipple and surrounding breast tissue. The loss of sensation occurs from nerve damage during the surgery. As the body heals it self, the nerves also heal and sensation is restored. However, in few cases the loss of sensation may improve, but not reach the same level as before the surgery or it may become a permanent result of the surgery.
